800th Anniversary of the Start of Construction of Salisbury Cathedral (1220)

800th Anniversary of the Start of Construction of Salisbury Cathedral, Wiltshire, England (1220).
The 404 ft (123m) church spire has been the tallest in the U.K. since 1549 (year the Lincoln Cathedral spire collapsed).

An original copy of the Magna Carta (1215) is on display in the Cathedral - and Burials in the Cathedral include: William Longespée, 3rd Earl of Salisbury (died 1226). William’s half-brother, King John of England, agreed to the Magna Carta (charter of rights) at Runnymede on June 15, 1215.

The Dome of Florence Cathedral - Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore - by Italian Renaissance Architect - Filippo Brunelleschi - was the largest dome in the World - and remains the largest masonry dome in the world. Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) is buried in the crypt of the Cathedral.

500th Anniversary of the Birth of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (1520)

500th Anniversary of the Birth of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (1520-1598) - chief advisor of Queen Elizabeth I for most of her reign, Secretary of State and Lord High Treasurer.
Burghley House (near Stamford, Lincolnshire) was built by William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley between 1555 and 1587. Burghley House has been used as a film location for movies such as “Pride & Prejudice” (2005) and “The Da Vinci Code” (2006).

Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury (1563-1612) (son of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley) was Secretary of State (1596-1612) during the Union of the Crowns of Scotland, England & Ireland (1603) when Tudor England gave way to Stuart rule. In addition, he is credited with discovering the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the British Parliament (1605). The thwarting of the plot is celebrated annually on November 5th as Guy Fawkes Night with bonfires and fireworks.

Florence Nightingale was appointed a Lady of Grace of the Order of St. John (LGStJ) in 1904 - St. John’s Gate & Museum of the Order of St. John, Clerkenwell, London.
