His voyage was just fifteen years after the famous voyage of the Mayflower ship to Plymouth, Massachusetts - which took place in 1620.
Research Notes: A Bridge in memory of the Founders of Milford, Connecticut - was erected in 1889 for the 250th anniversary of the town's founding (located on New Haven Avenue - between Daniel Street and Plymouth Pl.).
The bridge is built of stone over the river upon whose banks the first habitations were placed and near the spot where the first mill in the colony was erected. It contains about 40 memorial blocks placed at intervals. One of the memorial blocks bears the following inscription:
"IN MEMORIAM, CAPT. THOMAS TIBBALS, Obit 1703.
IN CONSIDERATION OF HIS HELPFULNESS ATT THE FIRST COMMING TO MILFORD TO SHOW THE FIRST COMERS THE PLACE. (Land Records)"
Thomas Tibbals had been engaged in the Pequot war (1634-1638), and in the pursuit of the remnant of the tribe, that fled to the Fairfield swamps the year previous, had seen the river, and for his services as guide the next spring, the Colonists granted him land, and in the deed made his "usefulness" the consideration.

However, the genealogy is out of print and the National Trust apparently no longer has any copies available.
