8. James HILLIS .48

Research Notes: To Do: (1) Further research is needed to identify James' ancestry and the names of his spouse and all of their children.

(2) Further research is needed to confirm whether or not James Hillis - father of Alexander Hillis (abt. 1861/62-1921) - was the same James as:

(i) 1901 - the James Hillis (age 70) who is listed in the 1901 Census with his wife Margaret (age 52) (possibly second wife of James) and 6 children between 8 and 25 years old - address 72 Skipton Street [*1], Pottinger, County Down, Northern Ireland.
(ii) 1909 - the James Hillis who died February 1, 1909 (age 77) and is buried in the Knock Burial Ground, Belfast, Northern Ireland (plot NW 113) - former address 74 Skipton Street.

Notes:
[*1] The 1888 marriage registry entry for Alexander (son of James Hillis) and Jane Beatty - identifies Alexander's address as 72 Skipton Street (i.e. same address).
[*2] The 1911 Census includes the above mentioned Margaret Hillis (widow) with 3 of her original 7 children - address 61 Hornby Street, Pottinger, County Down, Northern Ireland. Alexander Hillis and his family are listed in the 1911 Census as living on the same street - address 18 Hornby Street.
[*3] 1911 - the above Margaret Hillis died December 30, 1911 (age 62) and is buried in the Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, Northern Ireland (plot E4 206) - former address 61 Hornby Street.
[*4] 1921 - Alexander Hillis died November 16, 1921 (age 60) and is buried in the Dundonald Cemetery, Belfast, Northern Ireland (plot E4 133) - former address 18 Hornby Street.
[*5] There is a family story that Alexander Hillis was in charge of the care of a spinster sister. The "spinster sister" may have been a daughter of the above Margaret Hillis - and if so - she would more likely have been a half-sister of Alexander.

[*2] The 1901 Census lists a Mary Jane Beattie (age 61) (Head of Family - Married) and 2 daughters - address 21 Channing Street, Pottinger, County Down, Northern Ireland - witness Geo. Maxwell.
