Muckle Flugga Lighthouse was built in 1854 on the most northerly rock in the U.K.

Research Notes: Robert Burnett was "probably" the son of Alexander Burnett, Lighthouse Keeper (died in 1872 at Bell Rock Signal Tower, Abroath, Scotland) & Janet Birrell (died in 1831 at Point of Ayre, Isle of Man) who was born on April 19 and christened on April 21,1826 in Kirkcolm, Wigtown, Scotland - reasoning as follows:
(1) The Census information for 1851 through 1881 - indicates that Robert was born in Wigton, Galloway (Census 1851), Galloway (Census 1861), Stonykirk, Wigtonshire (Census 1871) and Wigton, Wigtown (Census 1881).
(2) The names of Robert Burnett & Elizabeth Crowe's first son and daughter were Robert "Alexander" and "Janet" Anne.
(3) The children of Alexander/Alexr. Burnet/Burnett & Janet/Jennet Birrell/Birrel/Birrle/Byrle/Borrel/Beral appear to have been (note all locations are near lighthouses):
[i]. [Isabella (nee Burnett) Drummond, born c.1812-16, Scotland - listed as a daughter in the 1851 through 1871 Censuses for Isle of Man]
[ii]. Margaret Burnet, christened 16/04/1815, Crail, Fife, Scotland
[iii]. Janet Burnet, chr. 23/02/1817, Crail, Fife, Scotland.
[iv]. [James Burnett, born c.1818, Fife, Scotland - listed as a son in the 1872 Death Registry entry for Alexander Burnett, Lightkeeper Superannuated, Widower of Janet Birrell]
[v]. Alexander Burnet, chr. 03/09/1820, Kirk Rushen, Isle of Man.
[vi]. John Burnet, chr. 03/06/1822, Rushen, Isle of Man.
[vii]. Robert Burnet, chr. 21/04/1826, Kirkholm, Wigtown, Scotland.
[viii]. Elizabeth Burnet, chr. 23/10/1828, Kirkholm, Wigtown, Scotland.
[ix]. Charles Burnett, chr. 03/01/1831, Bride, Isle of Man.
(4) Two years after Robert's marriage in Lezayre, Isle of Man - a Margaret Burnett - at the age of 34 - married (28/08/1849) Thomas Hadfield in Lezayre, Isle of Man. This Margaret appears to have been the above Margaret (christened 16/04/1815).
(5a) The Census for 1841 for Bride, Isle of Man - lists an Alexander Burnet (age 55 - Light Keeper - Point of Ayre), Margaret Burnet (age 25) and Robert Burnet (age 15) living in the same household.
(5b) This Alexander Burnet also appears to be listed as a Widower on the Isle of Man Census for the years 1851 through 1871 - with a daughter Isabella (Drummond), a Widow, and her children. An Isabella Burnett was married on August 28, 1841 to Daniel Drummond in Bride, Isle of Man.
(i) Census for 1851 for Lezayre, Isle of Man - Alexander Burnett (age 64 - Retired from Light House Service).
(ii) Census for 1861 for Maughold, Isle of Man - Alexander Burnett (age 74 - Superannuated Light Keeper).
(iii) Census for 1871 for Ramsey, Maughold, Isle of Man - Alexander Burrett (age 84 - Late Light Keeper).
(6) The 1872 Death Registry entry for Alexander Burnett, Lightkeeper Superannuated, died at Bellrock Signal Tower, Arbroath, Scotland, Widower of Janet Birrell - lists his son James Burnett, Lightkeeper as the informant.
(7) The "Registers and Lists of Lightkeepers" (ref: NLC4/1/1) held at the National Archives of Scotland - include brief information as follows:
(i) Alexander Burnett started his Lighthouse career on June 1, 1819 at the age of 33.
(ii) In January 1837 (after 17 years of service and at the start of the records for "Registers and Lists of Lightkeepers") Alexander is listed as a Lighthouse Keeper at Point of Ayre [Isle of Man]. Note - Point of Ayre is near Bride, Isle of Man.
(iii) The National Archives of Scotland indicated that "[Alexander] certainly spent 1837-1845 at Point of Ayre, before he retired; but it is probable that he served at other lighthouses before 1837. Most lightkeepers moved around many different lighthouses during the course of their career."
(iv) Alexander retired on January 15, 1845.
