New York City
The Dutch purchased Manhattan Island from the Lenape Native Americans in 1626 - and in 1664 surrendered the New Netherland colony to the British - and the name was changed to New York - in honour of the Duke of York.
The Duke of York later succeeded his brother as King - James II Stuart, King of England, Scotland and Ireland (1633-1701).
