The eruption covered the Ancient City of Pompei under 13 to 20
feet (4 to 6 meters) of volcanic ash and pumice. Scientific
excavations were started in the late 18th Century and continue
today.
Pompei is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site -
Archaeological Areas of Pompei, Herculaneum and Torre
Annunziata.

goes by the nickname “Big Ben” - originally a nickname for the
largest bell (the Great Bell).

Charles, Count de Lambert (1865-1944) was the first to fly an
airplane over Paris and the Eiffel Tower on October 18, 1909.
Count Charles was also the first in France to be given flying
lessons by Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) - brother of Orville Wright
(1871-1948) known as the ‘Wright Brothers’ - who invented, built
and flew the World's first successful airplane in 1903.
25th Anniversary of the Introduction of the Euro Currency -
1999.
The Euro was introduced in non-physical form (electronic
transfers …) on January 1, 1999 and in notes and coins on
January 1, 2002. The notes are the same for all countries with
images of generic bridges on one side symbolizing links between
Member States in the European Union and with the future - and
the coins have one side the same for all countries and one side
unique and designed by each country. Starter kits of coins were
available for purchase in late December 2001 - to enable
individuals to have the new currency coins on the first day of
introduction.
The Euro is the official currency for 20 of the 27 member states
of the European Union.

The opening ceremony will take place along the Seine River
between the Pont d’Austerlitz and Pont d’Iéna (by the Eiffel
Tower and Trocadéro) - passing by Pont au Change and Pont
Alexandre III. Most of the route is along the UNESCO World
Heritage site - Paris, Banks of the Seine.
Sports events will take place in various venues in and around
Paris - such as Swimming, Triathlon & Road Cycling by Pont
Alexandre III, Archery & Marathon finish line at the
Esplanade des Invalides, Marathon starting at the Hotel de Ville
(City Hall) ...
