Sainte Chapelle was built as a Royal Chapel, in the courtyard of
the former Royal Palace on the Île de la Cité (Palais de la
Cité), by Louis IX “the Saint”, King of France - and
construction was completed in 1248.
In addition to serving as a Royal Chapel - the relics of Christ
(including the Crown of Thorns and a fragment of the True
Cross), purchased by King Louis IX, were held in the Royal
Chapel (the relics of Christ were later moved nearby to the
Cathedral of Notre Dame).

The South Rose Window (Rose Sud or Rose du Midi) of the
Cathedral of Notre Dame was offered c.1260 by Louis IX “the
Saint”, King of France. The South Rose Window is dedicated to
the New Testament and includes eighty four panels divided into
four circles.
In April 2019 - the Cathedral sustained serious damage from a
fire that started in the roof. Unfortunately most of the
lead-covered wooden roof and the timber spire were destroyed.
Luckily the stone structure and treasures survived - including
the Rose windows and the relics of Christ (such as the Crown of
Thorns).
