The top three rows include statues portraying 151 medieval
rulers from the 6th to 16th Century. 58 of the first 101 statues

(4th Great-Grandson of Reginar (I) “Longneck”) and his wife
GERTRUDE of Flanders (House of Flanders).
(3b). GODFREY V Count of Louvain, Duke of Lower Lotharingia
(d.1139) (brother of Henry (III) Count of Louvain) and his wife
wife IDA of Chiny (d.1117/25) through to HENRY III, Duke of
Brabant (d.1261) (9th Great-Grandson of Reginar (I) “Longneck”)
(2nd row far right of belfry section of façade) and his wife

follows:
Counts & Dukes of Louvain - Lambert I (d.1015) [1st],
Lambert II (d.1062) [3rd], Henry II (d.1079) [4th], Godfrey I
(d.1139) [6th], Godfrey II (d.1142) [7th], Godfrey III (d.1190)
[8th], Dukes of Brabant - Henry I (d.1235) [10th], Henry II
(d.1248) [11th], Henry III (d.1261) [12th] & his wife
Adelaide/Alix of Burgundy (d.1273) [13th].
The early Counts of Louvain & Brussels built the first
Castle of Coudenberg in about 1100. In the 1770’s - about 40
years after a devastating fire - the Place Royale was built on
top of the ruins of Coudenberg Palace. The foundations of the
former palace have been excavated and are on display below
street level in the BELvue Museum.
The Royal Palace of Brussels was built on a section of the
former grounds of Coudenberg Palace.
Brussels Park was formerly part of the hunting gardens of
Coudenberg Palace.
La Grand-Place was initially a Medieval Market Square dating
back to the 11th Century.

House of Brabant - and the Cathedral of St. Michael and St.
Gudula, Brussels
Both Lambert II, Count of Louvain (d.1062) and his 3rd
Great-Grandson Henry I, Duke of Brabant (d.1235) expanded the
Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula starting in 1047 and
1226 respectively.
House of Brabant - and Saint Peter's Church (Sint-Pieterskerk),
Leuven, Belgium.
The church was reopened in 2020 after a lenthy restoration.
Sarcophagus of Henry I, Duke of Brabant (d.1235) and his wife
Mathilde of Flanders (d.1210).
In the crypt - grave marker of Dukes of Louvain - Godfrey II
(d.1142), Godfrey III (d.1190), Dukes of Brabant - Henry I
(d.1235), and Henry II (d.1248).
Saint Peter's Church (Sint-Pieterskerk) is part of the UNESCO
World Heritage Site - Belfries of Belgium and France.
House of Brabant - and Saint Gertrude’s Abbey Leuven / Louvain,
Belgium.
Saint Gertrude’s Abbey was founded in 1206 by Henry I, Duke of
Brabant (d.1235). The Abbey sustained damage during both WWI
& WWII and the Abbey Church was subsequently restored.

is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site - La Grand-Place,
Brussels.
Dominican Monastery Church of Leuven / Louvain, Belgium.
The Dominican Monastery Church was built on the site of the
former residence of the Dukes of Brabant and is the oldest
Gothic building in Leuven. The Church is now used as a cultural
center.
Henry III, Duke of Brabant (d.1261) and his wife Adelaide/Alix
of Burgundy (d.1273) were buried in the Church.
