According to legend Charlemagne “Charles The Great”, Holy Roman
Emperor (c.748-814) founded the Abbey of St. John c.775 - as
thanks for not being harmed by a snowstorm endured while
crossing the Umbrail mountain pass from Italy to Switzerland -
soon after he had been crowned King of the Lombards in Pavia. In
the first half of the 12th Century the Abbey became a women’s
Abbey.
There is a statue of Charlemagne in the Abbey Church.
