Brian Boru was King of Munster (978-1014) and High King of Ireland (1002-1014).

The Rock of Cashel was the former seat of the Kings of Munster and is where Brian Boru was crowned High King of Ireland in 1002. In 1101 Brian Boru’s Great-Grandson - Murtaugh O'Brien, King of Munster & High King of Ireland (Muircheartach Ua Briain) (d.1119) - gifted the fortress on the Rock of Cashel to the Catholic Church. The fortress was rebuilt as a Cathedral.
